Normalize first

A GPU name is not a complete SKU

Architecture, package, memory, host link, scale-up fabric, power, cooling, partition mode, and software matrix all belong in the comparison.

  1. Match scope.Per chip, module, server, or rack; one-way or bidirectional; dense or sparse.
  2. Match precision.BF16, vendor FP8 variants, INT8, NVFP4, and MXFP4 are not interchangeable labels.
  3. Match package.PCIe, SXM, OAM, NVL, Superchip, and rack systems can change memory, link, power, and operating requirements.
  4. Match software.Pin driver, framework, serving engine, kernels, model revision, and quantization format.
  5. Match workload.Report the input/output distribution, concurrency, SLO, and measurement boundary.
Representative data-center catalog

Compare memory, movement, envelope, and fit together

These are representative variants, not every regional or export-control SKU. Follow the linked live specification before procurement.

Form factor map

The suffix often changes the system more than the generation

VariantWhat can changeChoose it when
PCIe cardHost link, slot count, power ceiling, cooling, sometimes memoryIndependent replicas, graphics/media, existing servers, lower power density
SXM / OAM moduleHigher power, HBM, scale-up links, platform-specific baseboardTraining or model-parallel inference inside a tightly connected node
NVL / bridge pairPaired memory and link behavior, different host and power envelopeModels that benefit from a small, directly linked multi-GPU domain
HGX / UBB 8-GPU platformTopology, aggregate memory, CPU/NIC ratio, chassis and coolingScale-up jobs that communicate every layer or optimizer step
Superchip / rack systemCPU coupling, rack fabric, facility power and liquid-cooling obligationsLarge training, MoE, or inference fleets that can use the whole fabric domain
  • Request the exact manufacturer part and server bill of materials - not “H100 class.”
  • Record memory per GPU, GPU count, link topology, CPU/RAM, local storage, NIC speed, power cap, and cooling mode.
  • Ask whether quoted link bandwidth is per link, per GPU, aggregate, and bidirectional.
  • Confirm that the cloud instance exposes the advertised peer links to the guest.
One physical device, several consumers

Partitioning, time-slicing, and batching solve different problems

Sharing is not free capacity. Pick the mechanism according to isolation, residency, and scheduling needs.

MethodIsolationBest fitPrimary risk
Hardware partition (MIG)Dedicated memory paths and fault isolation within supported profilesSmall predictable services, multi-tenant isolationFixed slices fragment capacity; support varies by GPU/profile
AMD spatial partitionCompute and memory layouts defined by supported platform/firmwarePartitioned Instinct deploymentsExact combinations vary across GPU, firmware, driver, host and guest
Time-slicingNo memory or fault isolationBursty compatible jobs with trusted tenantsMore advertised replicas do not guarantee proportional compute
Engine-level continuous batchingRequests share one model/runtimeLLM services on a full GPUOne noisy workload can affect tail latency without admission control
Separate replicasProcess/container boundary; full weights per replicaIndependent models, failure domains, horizontal scaleDuplicated weights and fragmented KV/prefix caches
